SIL exists because of the sober reality that people around the world experience hardship and discrimination in part because of the languages they speak or sign. Yet it has been our joy, throughout our 90-year history, to work alongside local communities, together discovering language solutions to help overcome the challenging barriers in their lives.

Our Vision was born
Inspired by God’s love, we advocate, build capacity and work with local communities to apply language expertise which advances meaningful development, education and engagement with Scripture.
Today, SIL’s combined workforce of more than 4,000 staff and volunteers serves 855 million people across more than 1,300 language communities in over 100 countries.
From humble beginnings in 1934 as a summer linguistics training program with two students to the global community we are becoming today, SIL Global remains committed to partnering with language communities to unearth how their languages can connect them to opportunities for flourishing, uphold their dignity and honor their unique place in the world.
